Harlow passed me a note during “big church.” She doesn’t typically come into the sanctuary with us, opting to worship with her peers. But this day, she wanted to come “hear the music”. We sang and raised our hands in praise. When we settled in for the message, she got right to work taking her notes.
She beamed as she showed it to me.
“I love you, mama, because you are so comfy.”
Thanks, I guess? These are the words she told me when I was fluffier during my pregnancy with the twins. And afterwards when I was ravenous while nursing them. But almost two years in, I was starting to feel more like myself and less.. like a marshmallow (another affectionate term she’s bestowed upon me).
I don’t parent in a way that draws attention to appearance. The children know we don’t make fun of others for the way they look and we never dress up in order to garner attention from others. We dress up and put our best foot forward each day because God has created us just the way we are. Comfy and all.
But the more I considered this sentiment of “comfy”, the more I became enamored with the thought. That, for this time in my child’s life, I am her comfy place. I am where she goes for refuge and shelter. All her cares and worries disappear. I love you because you are comfy.
And you already know the holy spirit was stirring my heart to see the sweet connection that God is also MY comfy place.
We’ve been studying the book Don’t Give the Enemy a Seat at the Table by Louie Giglio. It dissects the 23rd psalm, which immediately comes to mind when considering how God is my provider, protector, comforter. Even when things around me aren’t going the way I’d hope they would be, He’s still steadfastly shepherding my heart.
Comfy.
Maybe you don’t feel comfy. Maybe you actually feel much the opposite – scrambling to find your footing. If you’ve been overwhelmed, underwhelmed, or just stuck in neutral, I urge you to seek him again. Tell Him of your desire to draw closer to Him and to get out of your comfort zone if it means gaining more of Him. If you feel like you’ve lost your saltiness, ask god to restore it. Not just feelings or emotions, but that all in, unquenchable zeal that drives your thoughts and actions. And then declare, again, your intention to serve Him and those He places along your path.
We can’t do it alone, y’all. But praise the Lord we know the one who does exceedingly, abundantly more than we could have hoped for!
2025 is gonna be a good one because I know who the Great One is.
See ya around the farm,
Bailey
